GET TO KNOW THE PROJECT

DEVELOPED WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES THROUGH THE RECREATIONAL FISHING

THE PROJECT

The so-called Mamirauá Fishing Communities started in 2023 through an initiative lead by some members of the Boca do Mamirauá community and Agência Zyba. The project seeks, in 5-years’ time, the full qualification of the communities so they can operate tourism autonomously, since the sale of service up to the clients’ feedbacks.

The intention of the project is to generate a source of income for the communities through recreational fishing and ecotourism, bringing to the region a sustainable source of income throughout the year and replacing more common activities in the region, like fishing with nets.

In 2023, the first year of the project, anglers from Brazil and abroad were able to live the experience of being lodged in the community and fishing in the lakes that were set aside for the project and using

wooden boats handmade by the communities; other activities were also presented, like the sale of handcrafts made by the communities.

Today, most of the communities receive their main income from artisanal fishing and Arapaima management but, due to the large extension of the RDS and the great number of lakes, monitoring in these places is practically impossible, attracting fishermen from other regions, who invade the lakes and fish in a predatory way.

One of the project’s premises is to monitor the lakes throughout the year, using fishing boats and checkpoints within the lakes in order to guarantee the conservation of fish and the project’s continuity as the years go by.

Tourism in a community base

Developing new forms of sustenance with the communities, through training in several sectors in tourism, improving the local families' quality of life.

FAMILIES

Circa 100 families receive direct or indirect benefits from the project.

COMMUNITIES

Nowadays, 4 communities within the RDS are part of the project.

RESOURCES

Income generation through recreational fishing, sale of handicrafts and inputs.

BENEFITS

Training in tourism-related activities, new sustainability practices and management.

SUSTAINABILITY

The project is based on sustainability and improved usage of natural resources in the region, thus, starting in 2024, we will not use plastic packaging and, up to 2026, 100% of our energy will come from solar panels.

Courses and training on wastewater treatment and recycling will be provided in the communities and schools, so that the children may have contact with this type of education.

In recreational fishing, 100% of the fish is caught, handled properly and returned to its natural habitat.
